Souttar, 24, has attracted interest after dazzling for Australia at the World Cup in Qatar last year, where his heroic efforts at the back guided the Socceroos to the last-16 of the competition.

Graham Arnold’s side were sent home by eventual champions Argentina, but Souttar’s performances in Australia’s four World Cup matches has convinced onlookers that he is ready to play at the highest level.

And according to The Daily Record, Leicester City lead the race to sign the Scottish-born centre back.

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers is desperare for defensive reinforcements, with the east Midlands club lingering just above the relegation battle between a handful of Premier League clubs.

Summer signing Wout Faes has failed to convince at the back, with his two own goals at Anfield last week a lowpoint in the young Belgian’s career.

But Leicester will have to act fast if they’re to land Souttar, with the same outlet reporting that Rodgers has sent scouts to watch the 24-year-old on three occasions.

The Foxes will, however, have to fend off top flight rivals Wolves and West Ham, who are also tracking the 24-year-old.

New Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui is expecting a busy January after taking over from Bruno Lage last year. The Spanish coach has already landed Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha on loan with an obligation to buy.

Centre back, defensive midfield and right back are also areas that Wolves are looking to strengthen.

Likewise, David Moyes also wants a new centre back this month, with the Hammers short in that area of their squad.
