Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is expected to demand defensive reinforcements and clarity over the future over Romelu Lukaku once the club appoint new owners.

The Blues are in the middle of a takeover process after Roman Abramovich decided to sell the club, shortly before being sanctioned by the UK government.

Those sanctions currently restrict Chelsea from negotiating contracts with players, new or existing, until the process is complete.

New ownership was expected to be in place by the start of May, but two weeks after the three final bids were submitted, there has been no update from the club.

Defender Antonio Rudiger has officially run out of patience and will not wait to agree a new deal with the club, instead deciding to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires this summer.

The German is thought to have an agreement with Real Madrid, while fellow centre-back Andreas Christensen, also out of contract in June, is likely to leave for Barcelona.

With the future of captain Cesar Azpilicueta also in doubt, Tuchel could be left with a serious lack of defenders – with 37-year-old Thiago Silva, academy graduate Trevoh Chalobah and Malang Sarr the only senior centre-backs definitely staying.

Sevilla defender Jules Kounde remains heavily-linked with Chelsea following his failed move to Stamford Bridge last summer, and according to the Telegraph, Tuchel will ask the club’s new owners for two new defenders, while Lukaku is set for talks over his future.

The club’s record signing has struggled upon his return to Stamford Bridge last summer, failing to net a single Premier League goal in 2022.

Having fallen out of favour under Tuchel, there are rumours of a return to Italy for the former Inter Milan striker.
