Gvardiol brought the hosts level in the last-16 tie by meeting Marcel Halstenberg’s cross, following a short corner.

The 21-year-old central defender rose above his counterpart Ruben Dias cancel out Riyad Mahrez’s opener.

BT Sport co-commentator Keown praised the dominance and leap of the highly rated defender.

‘Gvardiol there is so dominant from that cross,’ Keown said. ‘I wondered if there was an arm on Dias when that comes in.

‘He gets up so early, so high.

‘It is a wonderful ball in by the way, look how high he gets up, there is only one winner there.

‘I was cautious because I thought there might be a foul but all credit to Gvardiol, that is some leap that to get up for that.’
