Trafford has been sent out on loan in the last two seasons by City, having spent the first half of last term at Accrington Stanley.

He is now at Bolton, and has conceded just 19 goals in his 22 league appearances for the League One outfit, keeping 10 clean sheets.

His performances have caught the eye of Rangers, with the Scottish giants tracking the youngster ahead of next month’s transfer window.

Rangers’ goalkeeping duties have been shared between Allan McGregor, 40, and Jon McLaughlin, 35, so far this season.

The pair have conceded 18 goals between them in 19 games, but Rangers still find themselves nine points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race.

A move for Trafford would indicate that they are starting to look ahead to the future, given that McGregor is twice the age of the City shot-stopper.

Trafford has worked his way through the age groups at international level, and was handed his England Under-21 debut in June by Lee Carsley in a 5-0 win against Kosovo.

He then made a second appearance in England’s 3-1 victory over Germany in September
