Angel Gomes has admitted he imagines himself playing for Manchester United again because the club is ‘home’.

Gomes became the youngest player to make a first-team appearance at Old Trafford since 1953 in May 2017 under Jose Mourinho. The academy graduate was handed his debut aged just 16 years, 263 days old and he was touted to have a bright future.

However, Gomes could not break into the first-team at United and he signed for French club Lille in the summer of 2020 on a free transfer before being immediately sent out on loan to Portugal, where he spent a season with Boavista.

Gomes, 22, has since become a first-team regular at Lille and he’s started in every Ligue 1 game when he’s been available this season.

The forward opened up on his decision to leave United again this week and he left the door open for a return to Manchester.

“But I had to follow my heart. I felt that I needed to take another step in my career. I felt that, had I stayed, there wouldn’t be a lot of opportunities for me. Luís Campos and Lille spoke about their project and I believed in it even more.

“That’s what convinced me to move – the faith Lille had in me. Do I imagine myself coming back one day? Obviously, it’s home. I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground, and keep playing, making the most of it.

“I can’t predict what will happen in the future.”
