PSG star Mauro Icardi is in talks over a potential return to Italy with Serie A newcomers Monza.

The newly promoted side have met with Icardi’s wife and agent, Wanda Nara, twice in recent weeks as they try to finalise a deal to bring the Argentine to the Stadio Brianteo.

It seems the forward has come to terms with PSG’s decision to sell him – after labelling rumours over a potential departure as a ‘load of c**p’ last month.

According to RMC Sport, Icardi’s wife Nara has held two rounds of talks with the newly promoted side as they push to secure the Argentine’s signature.

Though there’s a great disparity in quality between PSG and Monza, the move could make sense for the Icardi family who still have a home and business interests in the Lombardy region.

The decision to leave the French giants comes a shock U-turn from his position just a month ago, where he angrily refuted any claims he would leave the Ligue 1 champions.

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport claimed Icardi’s career was ‘hanging in the balance’, prompting a furious response from the player on Instagram.

‘I’m in Africa, next year I’ll let you organise my holidays, if you like,’ Icardi wrote.

‘These stories are a load of cr*p like every year. When I was scoring 30 goals a season it was the same thing. My career in the balance? I have two years left on my contract.

‘I don’t think it’s in the balance as you suggest with this cr*p. At 29, don’t worry that having scored 200 goals, I think everyone knows me well enough.’

Monza are interested in bringing Icardi back to the country where he spent nine years of his playing career at Sampdoria and Inter Milan.

The Argentine, who scored just five goals in 30 appearances last season, fell behind the star-studded front three of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in the pecking order at the Ligue 1 champions.

Icardi made only 10 league starts under Mauricio Pochettino in the 2021-22 campaign, fuelling suggestions that he may be heading for the exit door.
