Ralf Rangnick has told Marcus Rashford to mirror Jadon Sancho and transform his strong performances in training into games.

Rashford started on the bench in Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Watford on Saturday afternoon before coming on in the 74th minute as the team pushed to break the deadlock.

However, he failed to make an impact and it is now six consecutive appearances for the 24-year-old without finding the back of the net.

Speaking before Saturday’s game, Rangnick outlined the ‘next step’ that Rashford had to take to rediscover his form.

‘Right now he is trying to find his best possible shape and performance and we are just trying to give him that helping hand with everything we can, showing him video footage and speaking with him regularly,’ the Manchester United boss said.

‘In training, he is in top form and shape and that is why I played him. But now it’s about transforming that performance from training into the league and this is the next step he has to take.

‘By the way, we had a very similar situation with Jadon six or seven weeks ago and he is the best example about what can happen, it’s the player himself who has to perform and get the best out of his own performance. This is the same for Marcus now.’

Rashford missed the first two months of this season after undergoing shoulder surgery, but has struggled for consistency following his return.

The England international has scored just five goals in 23 appearances, most recently when he provided the 93rd-minute winner in the 1-0 victory of West Ham last month.

He appears to have been taken over in the pecking order by 19-year-old Anthony Elanga, who replaced him against Atletico Madrid on Thursday and scored a crucial equaliser in the Champions League round of 16 first leg
