Morata is currently playing football for Juventus while on loan from parent club Atletico Madrid – who he joined from Chelsea in July 2020 in a deal worth £58million.

However, the former Real Madrid striker had been linked with a return to LaLiga as the bitter rivals of his former club had reached out in regards to a loan deal.

Barcelona have been searching for a striker during the January window despite already signing Ferran Torres from Manchester City for £55m.

The Catalans are also looking to add depth to their attack due to Ansu Fati’s injury issues this season.

Therefore, they turned their attention to Morata – who excelled in his first spell in Turin before struggling to perform this season.

Previous reports had stated that a deal between Morata and Barcelona was ’95 per cent complete’. However, Marco Branca who works for the agency that represents Morata has said the striker was happy at Juventus.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport via Football Italia, Branca said: ‘The road to Barcelona is no longer durable. Alvaro feels well in Turin and we’ll see what will happen with Atletico Madrid in the summer.

‘I am optimistic about his future in Black and White. Like Benzema, he works a lot for the team and he wasn’t scoring many goals with Cristiano Ronaldo.’

Therefore, Barcelona may have to wait until the summer to sign the 29-year-old striker.

Nevertheless, Xavi is eager to agree a deal with Morata as he wants a six-yard box finisher; someone who will get on the end of crosses and turn Barcelona’s domination into goals.

Xavi also likes Morata’s enthusiasm in the press and his tenacity to close down players. He believes this could work well within his plan.
