Real Madrid advance to the next round of Copa del Rey after a comeback win earn by 10 men. Marcelo sees red card

At 1-0 down to Elche in the first period of extra time, Real Madrid looked like they were about to tumble humbly out of the Copa Del Rey.
All of a sudden, two forgotten men – Isco and Eden Hazard – came to the rescue, scoring goals of high class to send their team into the quarter-finals.
Here’s what we learned from an ultimately enthralling battle at Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero.

Hazard finally comes to the party
For the first time since joining in 2019, Eden Hazard won a game for Real Madrid. And his intervention came right on time, with the tie looking likely to head to the lottery of a penalty shoot-out. The reality is that Hazard wasn’t playing particularly well when he came on, but he took the one chance he had with aplomb.

Marcelo rolls back the years
In the first half Marcelo – on a rare start – was largely on a defensive brief, and didn’t do it too well, leaving gaping holes for any Elche attacker who ventured down the right.

But the Brazilian began to stamp his mark on the game as it progressed, and he was back to his inventive best in setting up chances for Rodrygo and Vinicius. Marcelo ended up getting sent off late on – which led to Elche’s goal – but the referee’s decision was tough on him.

Camavinga belies his age
Eduardo Camavinga has a lot to learn still, but at 18 years old he is nonetheless impressive whenever he steps on the pitch. His ability to carry the ball is wondrous, and he promises to be a great asset to Real in midfield. And with the likes of Luka Modric coming towards the back-end of his career, it’s just at the right time.
