Real Madrid will reportedly battle Liverpool to sign Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips in the summer.

The 26-year-old has been a standout player in Marcelo Bielsa’s side for a number of seasons now and reportedly wants to play Champions League football.

That has reportedly put Liverpool – who are said to be preparing a £33.4million bid – as well as Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, on alert for a potential move for the England international.

However, Catalan publication El Nacional now claim Real Madrid have thrown their hat in the ring, with Leeds reportedly more willing to let the midfielder move abroad than see him join a fellow Premier League side.

The report adds Phillips is one of the ‘great obsessions’ of Real boss Carlo Ancelotti, who wants to convert him into a substitute for current midfield star Casemiro.

The report claims there has been talk of the Brazil international possibly being in decline, with no sign of his performances improving.

However, the report adds club president Florentino Perez may have to be persuaded to sign another player from the Premier League, with Michael Owen, Jonathan Woodgate and Gareth Bale all ultimately failing to convince at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Phillips however played down a potential move away last month, claiming he is happy at Elland Road and ready to sign a new contract.

In an exclusive interview with Sportsmail, Phillips said: ‘I just want to focus on getting back fit. But I speak to the owner [Andrea Radrizzani] regularly. I want a new contract. I’m very happy here.’

Phillips, it is said, is valued at £60million by his would-be suitors, but he said: ‘I just think it’s mental. But I’m not gonna say that I’m not worth £60m!’
