Former Manchester United captain Paul Ince says Ralf Rangnick should hand the armband to Scott McTominay over Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo has been given the role as captain for the Red Devil’s clash with Wolves on Monday night – due to Harry Maguire missing the game due to injury.

Maguire has struggled for form all season, with some suggesting that interim boss Rangnick should give Ronaldo the armband permanently.

However, Ince feels that McTominay would be the better choice over the Portuguese superstar.

He said during Sky Sports’ pre-match coverage: ‘If you were to give it to someone, if I was Ralf Rangnick I would give it to McTominay.

‘Because, I think the captain should be based off their performances and what he’s done on the pitch.

‘He’s 25, it would be a nice learning curve for him. Now, why give it to Ronaldo when everyone’s moaning about him walking off the pitch everytime United get beaten and not clapping the fans.

‘It’s also about setting an example and I think the way McTominay is playing, give it to him – let him have a go.’

Ince’s comments came after he and Jamie Redknapp praised the Scotland international for his performance in United’s 3-1 victory over Burnley on Thursday.

McTominay scored the opening goal of the game and produced a commanding display in midfield.

Redknapp though feels replacing Maguire as captain would be ‘disrespectful’.

He said: ‘I think it’s the least of their worries right now is the captain for Manchester United.

‘There’s a culture change that has to happen, have to change their habits.

‘If you’re going to change the captain, I’m listening to a lot of the ex-players that don’t even want him to be playing at the moment, saying ‘it’s all Ronaldo’s fault’ – it’s the last of their problems.

‘You just need senior players doing the right things everyday at that football club, that will improve the culture.

‘Being the captain at the club has become less and less important.’

When presenter David Jones asked whether it would be important for Ronaldo, Redknapp added: ‘Well, how disrespectful would that be to take the captaincy off Harry Maguire?

‘If you were Cristiano Ronaldo, right now you’re thinking ‘I want to be the team player, I want to make sure I help all my players’.

‘You take the captaincy off Harry Maguire what would that do for his confidence, it would be even lower.’
