Cavani has been linked with a move to the Nou Camp in the January transfer window to replace Sergio Aguero who was forced to retire from football this week because of an irregular heartbeat.

Barca are also chasing Manchester City’s Ferran Torres with the bidding currently around £42million.

After agreeing a new 12-month contract in the summer, Cavani has made just three starts for United this season due to a tendon problem in his leg and the return of Cristiano Ronaldo as United’s first-choice striker.

Speculation in Spain has suggested that the 34-year-old would be interested in a move to Barca, but it’s understood that United want him to see out the remaining six months of his contract.

The recent Covid outbreak at the club – which meant that just seven players were available for Saturday’s postponed game against Brighton – also underlines the need for a big squad as the Premier League looks to plough on through the pandemic.

United are set to resume first-team operations at their Carrington training base on Tuesday after they were closed down on Thursday in attempt to stem the rate of infection.

Meanwhile, defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been banned from driving for six months and fined £31,500 after admitting driving while disqualified and without insurance.
