Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has called on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to recruit more experienced coaches in order to turn around his flagging Old Trafford tenure.

Solskjaer currently has Mike Phelan, a former assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson, as his No 2 at United but also has young coaches on his ranks such as Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.

Parker believes a more experienced set of hands would help the United squad, as well as Solskjaer himself, after a difficult start to the Premier League season.

‘He needs someone to come in next to him who can help him improve that squad. Ole needs to be stronger but he needs someone experienced, with more stature, in that dressing room working as his assistant,’ Parker told BetFred.

‘He’s Head Coach. In all the great teams that Manchester United have had, look at the assistants that sat next to Alex Ferguson.

‘It didn’t bother him having different people around him. He gained experience and it made his teams better. Whoever came in made his teams better and it made him a better manager.’

As well as Phelan, other notable members of Ferguson’s coaching staff included Brian Kidd, Carlos Quieroz, Rene Meulensteen, Steve McClaren and the late Walter Smith over his trophy-laden reign at United.

Parker also claimed that the United players are not confronting each other over their slump in form after the recent 5-0 loss to Liverpool was followed up by a 2-0 defeat against Manchester City – both at Old Trafford.

‘We’re in a world now where people can’t shout at people because they get upset,’ Parker said. ‘Find out about them. Get them upset. Tell them the truth about their game. It hurts.’

‘Roy Keane would have told you that you were c**p on a Monday morning. In this current United side, none of them are shouting at one another.’

United resume their Premier League campaign away to Watford on November 20.
