Andreas Christensen’s Chelsea future is hanging in the balance after his agent reportedly asked to change the terms of his new contract at the 11th hour.

The defender, 25, is free to speak to other clubs in January with his current deal close to expiry, but had been in talks with the Blues about a lucrative extension.

The Telegraph report that Chelsea were left stunned this week after believing they had reached an agreement with Christensen and his agent over a new five-year contract, only for them to bring a proposal to reduce the length to three years.

As it stands, the talks are said to be at an impasse, with neither the club nor Christensen and his representatives willing to back down.

Thomas Tuchel is desperate to keep the Dane – who is currently away on international duty – at Chelsea, and the club are still confident of ironing out any issues to get a new contract signed.

The player himself remains relaxed about the situation, and insisted there is ‘no pressure’ when questioned by journalists at a press conference this week.

‘I don’t think about it [talking to other clubs from January] at all,’ he said. ‘I enjoy playing football and I don’t feel there is any pressure or anything. I just enjoy it.

‘I don’t know why everyone thinks it’s a bad situation. No one has said it’s bad [for] both parties. I’m still happy and I enjoy playing football.

‘Yes (it’s in Chelsea’s interest to tie him down to a new contract), but on the other hand, they also have a player who right now enjoys playing football and the coach shows him confidence. There is no bad relationship, there is nothing.’

Christensen is in excellent form for the table-topping Blues this season, and has played 90 minutes in eight of Chelsea’s 11 Premier League games so far.

He was previously unsure of his future given a lack of assurances of playing time in a squad filled to the brim with world-class talent, but has now received the backing of Tuchel and been told he has a big role to play.

There is also a growing feeling that Antonio Rudiger will depart the club at the end of this season, with his contract coming to an end and his wage demands very high.

The Telegraph report that the club have offered him a new contract in the region of £140,000 a week, but Rudiger is understood to want in excess of £200,000.
