Iceland international Runarsson joined Arsenal from French side Dijon at the beginning of last season and has made just six appearances overall.

The 26-year-old has failed to impress making one Premier League appearance as a substitute when Bernd Leno was sent off against Wolves.

Runarsson fell down the pecking order and is the Gunners’ third-choice shot-stopper behind No 1 Leno and back-up Aaron Ramsdale.

Arsenal brought in Ramsdale from Sheffield United in an £30million deal 11 days ago to provide competition to Leno.

The Gunners opted for a British-based goalkeeper to join the club after initially looking at Ajax’s Andre Onana, with Ramsdale and West Brom’s Sam Johnstone both heavily linked during the summer transfer window.

Arsenal saw two bids for the Englishman turned down but finally snapped up their summer target after losing their opening Premier League game to Brentford.

Things have not got better for Mikel Arteta’s outfit since as they’ve made their worst start to a season for 67 years with three defeats from their opening three fixtures.
