Arsenal are pushing to sign Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, days after the Gunners had scrapped plans to move for the Englishman, according to reports.

The North Londoners are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer, with confidence in No 1 stopper Bernd Leno dwindling, particularly after his unimpressive performance against Brentford.

Arsenal have opted for a British-based goalkeeper to join the club after initially looking at Ajax’s Andre Onana, with Ramsdale and West Brom’s Sam Johnstone both heavily linked.

The Blades value Ramsdale at £30million and the Gunners informed the second tier outfit that they were unwilling to meet their valuation of the 23-year-old, appearing to walk away from the deal.

However, Football London reports that Arsenal are back at the negotiating table with United understood to be keen to recoup some value for the goalkeeper, having paid Bournemouth £18.5m for his services last summer.

It is understood that the Blades are now likely to accept a fee of £20m for Ramsdale, with realistic add-ons eventually increasing the total transfer value.

Arsenal have already seen two bids for the Englishman rejected, and will hope that this is a case of third time lucky as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his squad before the window shuts.

The Gunners were embarrassed at Brentford in the Premier League’s curtain-raiser last Friday night, as comical defending played its part in a 2-0 defeat.

Jamie Carragher labelled Arsenal’s performance ‘weak’, opining that the top flight newcomers ‘bullied’ their more established rivals at the Brentford Community Stadium.

‘How do you describe Arsenal’s defending here? It’s just Arsenal. Weak, bullied, men against boys again. New season same old story,’ he said on commentary duty for Sky Sports.

‘Spurs have it that people say it’s ‘Spursy’. I think it’s about time Arsenal have something like that as well. Because this is just an Arsenal performance. Everyone knows what that means; an Arsenal performance.’
