Everton are reportedly in talks with Sergio Romero over bringing the goalkeeper to Goodison Park this summer.

The 34-year-old will be a free agent at the end of the month when his Manchester United contract expires, with it announced that the club won’t be renewing his deal.

According to The Athletic talks are underway with Everton, but there is also interest in Europe, including from Juventus and Celta Vigo.

Sportsmail revealed Everton’s interest in Romero last month, with the Argentine keen for a move away from Old Trafford as he fell behind Lee Grant as the club’s third-choice goalkeeper.

David de Gea and Dean Henderson have been fighting it out for the starting spot in the side, while the expected arrival of Tom Heaton made Romero’s departure almost inevitable.

Everton attempted to bring him in on a loan last season, but the £2m loan fee did not meet United’s valuation of £5m.

The Toffees see Romero as someone who could challenge Jordan Pickford as the first-choice between the sticks, with it likely that Robin Olsen will return to Italy after his loan spell from Roma.

Juventus are also keeping tabs on the situation, believing Romero could provide strong cover for Wojciech Szczesny.

The Argentine spent some time back in his homeland during parts of last season, sanctioned by United, with Solskjaer hinting that Romero had fallen right down the pecking order earlier this year.

He said: ‘Sergio is working hard in training. He’s in the group and of course he lost a lot of training earlier on in the season.

‘He joined us late after time back home and over Christmas as well, he was with family in Argentina.

‘He’s working with the keepers but with Dean (Henderson), Lee (Grant) and David (de Gea) it’s been more difficult to get in the match squad.’
