Messi has revealed that he wants to take on a role as a technical secretary once he retires from playing and hopes to end up back at Barcelona.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner was forced to leave the club in summer as Barcelona’s dire financial situation meant they could not tie him down to a new contract.

The club could not afford to keep hold of their greatest ever player amid their unprecedented financial woes, after racking up more than £1billion in debt and recording a £409million loss for last season.

While Messi agreed to a 50 per cent wage cut, the Catalans were still not able to find a way to keep him which resulted in him departing for PSG.

But, despite the 34-year-old now plying his trade in Paris, he is eyeing a return to the Nou Camp as he begins planning life beyond his playing days.

‘Yes. I always said that I would love to be able to help the club,’ he told SPORT.

‘I would love to be a technical secretary at some point. I don’t know if it will be at Barcelona or not. Or if it will be elsewhere.

‘If there is a possibility, I would like to contribute again in what I can because it is the club that I love and I would love for it to continue to be good, to continue growing and to continue being one of the best in the world.’
