Le Parisien report this afternoon that 2,000 police officers and  will be deployed around Paris on Wednesday night ahead of the World Cup semi-final clash between France and Morocco.

The figure will be an increase from the 1,200 which were on the streets on Saturday night following the two countries’ victories. Fans of both teams have been celebrating in the streets of the French capital, notably along the famous Champs-Elysées avenue, with the strong Moroccan community making their presence felt over the course of the Atlas Lions’ impressive run in the competition so far.

Despite what has been claimed by a number of French far-right figures, there were no major incidents or “riots” on Saturday, with the atmosphere in central Paris remaining festive for most of the night, with only a few burnt scooters and a couple of broken windows to report. Overall, 91 people were stopped by police, but from a security standpoint the evening was deemed to be a success.

The French government’s spokesperson Olivier Véran has pointed out on LCI that rather than “constantly” anticipating any potential incidents, the reasoning was instead to ensure that there would be a sufficient number of police forces present on the night.
