Pundits could not agree on Newcastle’s first goal against Tottenham on Sunday night, as Jamie Redknapp and Les Ferdinand clashed over a coming together between Hugo Lloris and Callum Wilson in the build-up.

The Newcastle striker raced forward in the 31st minute and was met by Lloris, leading to the pair clashing into one another.

Lloris was left badly out of position, allowing Wilson to neatly chip the ball into the net from distance. The goal was checked by VAR, but was not disallowed.

It was nothing on Gary Neville’s clash with Roy Keane on Saturday night, but Redknapp and Ferdinand did differ in their thoughts on the strike.

‘Normally the goalkeeper would get this decision, but I’m glad he didn’t  because I thought Lloris ran into him,’ Said Ferdinand on Sky.

‘It’s a great run from Wilson, and I don’t see how Wilson gets out of the way. I’m going to be in the centre forward’s union.’

Former Tottenham midfielder Redknapp disagreed, arguing: ‘I think it’s a foul. I think Wilson obstructs Lloris. It’s still unbelievable composure to score, but if I was Spurs manager I would be so disappointed.’

One thing they could agree on was Miguel Almiron’s excellent goal that doubled Newcastle’s lead in the first half.

‘It’s an unbelievably bit of play,’ Redknapp mused. ‘I love seeing players doing this, knock it past the defender and then it’s a really good finish. I’m so pleased for him.’

Ferdinand added: ‘Almiron goes at defenders with pace, and he’s in that vein of rich form where he just puts it away.’
