Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has lauded his players after they beat Liverpool 3-2 in a fiesty contest at the Emirates.

Liverpool twice equalised from losing positions, but Arsenal secured the win in the 76th minute after Bukayo Saka converted from the penalty spot.

It was a second goal of the game for the young England man, while Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring in the first minute.

Speaking after the game, Arteta said of beating Liverpool: ‘It is great, especially the way we won the game, the way we played, the atmosphere was incredible, and we deserved to win the game.

The manager was especially impressed with his players given how dangerous Liverpool can be, as he explained: ‘There were a lot of moments, and at any moment they can open you up with the players they have.

‘I think they were very efficient to take the chances they had, but I think we had a lot of composure and character in moments to overcome them and especially with the way we played in the second half.’

On Martinelli’s goal in the first minute, Arteta added: ‘It is the best way to start, you can see with everybody and the way it generates the stadium, so really happy.’

The win puts Arsenal back at the top of the Premier League table, one point clear of Manchester City after nine games.

The Gunners will next be in action against Jesse Marsch’s Leeds next Sunday, who currently sit 14th after a turbulent start to the season.
