Antony says he felt anxious ahead of his transfer to Manchester United, revealing he had a lot of sleepless nights at Ajax prior to the switch.

The 22-year-old marked a memorable debut with a goal, firing past Aaron Ramsdale on 35 minutes the net the opener in United 3-1 Old Trafford win over Arsenal. The £85m signing arrived on deadline day after forcing an exit from Ajax.

The Brazilian did not take part in Ajax first team training ahead of the transfer, after making his wish to leave clear to the club. He conducted a strongly-worded interview in which he blasted the Dutch champions for not allowing him to leave after a second bid from United was turned down.

In the end, Antony got his wish and Ajax received an Eredivisie record fee for his services after also raking in £47m for Lisandro Martinez from United. Describing the days leading up to his United transfer, Antony detailed his unsteady emotions.

It was difficult, I was anxious, he admitted to Sky Sports. I could not wait to get here and put the shirt on. There were sleepless nights and difficult moments at Ajax as well.

Everyone knows, I was in contact with the people here. I’m thankful to Man United for their persistence, for their faith, wanting to sign me and giving me hope that it would be possible.

I’m really happy. I feel fulfilled being at the club and wearing this shirt. Antony started Thursday 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad in the Europa League and is expected to play a role in this week clash with Sheriff Tiraspol in Moldova.
