Newcastle are exploring the possibility of trying to sign Youri Tielemans from crisis club Leicester.

The 25-year-old has received heavy interest from Arsenal this summer and is considered their No 1 target if Mikel Arteta chooses to strengthen his midfield following the injuries to Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny.

But Sportsmail understands Newcastle have now entered the race and are trying to see if Tielemans – who is in the final year of his contract and is keen to leave the club – is an option for them late on in the window.

The Foxes are yet to receive an offer they deem appropriate for the Belgian despite the level of interest in the Belgium international, who Liverpool have also been reportedly monitoring.

If he leaves before 11pm on Thursday, Tielemans will be the third sale at Leicester this summer, with Kasper Schmeichel having joined Nice and Wesley Fofana on the verge of a £70million move to Chelsea.

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers admits his squad are currently not stable due to the uncertainty around a number of his players.

‘I think I mentioned before that any environment to develop has to be stable. Our stability is not there.

‘That will change when the window closes. There are players that maybe thought they were moving on but they’re not. We haven’t been able to get players in to improve.

‘And then there are players in the last years of their contracts. We need to beat the drum collectively.

‘We have talented players but it doesn’t count for anything if it’s not done collectively. When the window closes, it should settle down.’

Magpies boss Eddie Howe also wants the club to sign a defensive midfielder on loan ahead of the transfer window deadline on Thursday.

The Magpies have spent more than £100million on signings this summer, with £60m record signing Alexander Isak following Sven Botman, Matt Targett and Nick Pope to St James’ Park this summer.

And Sportsmail understands Eddie Howe still wants to sign a No 6 before the 11pm deadline
