Former Chelsea striker has revealed, the real story behind Chelsea’s 2012 champions League win. Drogba who is a Chelsea club icon, was the very man who scored the winning penalty after the game had gone into extra time, later a penalty shootout ensued. This win was one of the greatest moment in the Chelsea’s club history. Starting off, Drogba had narrated how then manager André Villas-Boas was sacked, this had prompted the players to keep their differences aside as a squad meeting was held.

Recognizing they were all partly, responsible for the departure of the manager. Had decided to keep their egos aside and give everything to the competition even though they were 4-1 down against Napoli. This decision was taken in a meeting led by John Terry, the captain and other big names like goal keeper Petr Cech, including midfielder Frank Lampard. Didier Drogba went on to say realizing that for 8years everyone at the club has been chasing this particular trophy, he took it upon himself to reach out to Juan Mata;

”𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰, 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘮𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘨𝘶𝘦.

Juan Mata looked at Drogba like; 𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘺, 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘋𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘳 𝘋𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘣𝘢 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘢 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘮𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘯 𝘪𝘵.

Drogba, said he went on to explain to Juan MataI why this trophy was important to him. He told the 23year old, how he had been in the Chelsea team for 8 years and never won it. He said he believed Mata was the one who’s gonna help the team win the champions League Cup. Promising Mata, Drogba has said he’ll even give him a present if they win it. Three months later, Chelsea was in Munich, in the final, in Bayern Munich stadium, playing the finals against them. Chelsea, according to Drogba were submerged with a red wave of attack, and it took the host just 8mins to take the lead.

At that moment Drogba said he felt so discouraged, but a certain young lad in the person of Mata told him:

“𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘋𝘪𝘥𝘪, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦!”

Almost in tears, Drogba said he answered after looking at the time and score:

“𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵? 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳”.

It was at the very last minute, last corner. Chelsea had their first corner, against 18 corners for Bayern Munich. The very person that took the corner kick, was no other person but Juan Mata. Chelsea won that day. Drogba concluded by saying, that the lesson he learnt that day was always to believe.
