Former England striker Gary Lineker led the plaudits for Harry Kane after he became only the second man to reach 50 goals for the Three Lions.

The Tottenham striker reached his half-century of international goals to rescue England from defeat in Germany on Tuesday night.

Kane has taken just 71 caps to reach the landmark as he continues to close quickly on Wayne Rooney’s national record of 53 goals.

Lineker tweeted: ’50 goals for @HKane. Fabulous achievement.

‘England play so much better when they have a go. Too much talent to play overly cautious and it doesn’t play to their strengths.’

Another fan tweeted: ‘Harry Kane is 3 goals behind Wayne Rooney in 44 less games. That’s insane. That’s phenomenal actually.’

A third said: ‘Harry Kane is sensational! A complete number 9.’

A Tottenham fan added: ‘This England team would be absolutely nothing with out Harry Kane. He’s incredible. I cannot wait for next season with him under Conte after a full pre season.’

Another said: ‘Tottenham and England legend. Greatest goalscorer of his generation, beyond doubt.’

The captain’s late penalty moved him ahead of Bobby Charlton to second in the all-time list of England goalscorer – just three behind Wayne Rooney.

Jonas Hofmann fired the host’s ahead just after half-time, but Kane fired past Manuel Neuer after he was fouled in the box by Nico Schlotterbeck.

After the 1-1 draw, England boss Gareth Southgate heaped praise on his star forward following his 50th goal for England, he said: ‘I think rightly the fact he’s got 50 goals will be the centre part of the story.

‘But his all round game, the way he led the line, the way he competed, the way he pressed was exceptional.

‘His quality to drop deep, and I know people say he drops too deep, but you need a player who can unlock the game.’

Team-mate Kieran Trippier added: ‘Harry Kane stepped up as always. He is special. I used to play with him for club and country. Fifty goals is incredible. He’s a top pro. Great leader.’
