This Swansea City team aspire to dominate possession, build from the back and play nice passing football. But sometimes, to get the results you crave, you just need a bit of luck in the penalty box pinball.

So it was in this win over Bristol City, where as stubborn deadlock was broken by Cyrus Christie being in the right place at the right time 11 minutes from the end.

We were heading for a stalemate, after Swansea’s Michael Obafemi cancelled out Andreas Weimann’s first-half opener, when Ryan Manning burst down the left and delivered a low cross that Joel Piroe flicked on.

Christie was first to arrive at the back post but saw his initial effort saved by the leg of Daniel Bentley. The rebound fell kindly for Olivier Ntcham but his attempt to turn it home hit the keeper too.

That ricochet came out and hit Christie, who might not have known a great deal about it but isn’t likely to be too bothered.

It was a scruffy goal to decide a scruffy game played in atrocious conditions between two lower mid-table Championship sides going nowhere.

Swansea were able to make absolutely sure with a third goal in stoppage time, with Piroe rolling home his 14th goal of the season from the edge of the box.

The Anglo-Welsh needle between the two sets of supporters elevated the atmosphere and sense of occasion above a meeting merely of 16th and 18th in the second tier.

‘One-nil and you f**ked it up’ echoed around the stadium in the closing seconds as Swansea’s fans toasted a first comeback win since they beat West Brom in October.

Both sides enjoyed their moments in the first-half without anyone taking command and ultimately it was the visitors who snatched the lead.

Swansea threatened first as they sought to recover from a dismal 3-0 defeat at Stoke City in midweek. Obafemi’s early curling shot was little trouble for Max O’Leary though.

Bristol City have been equally inconsistent this season but they came into this one off the back of a 2-1 win over struggling Reading in midweek.

Chris Martin ensured home keeper Andy Fisher was tested for the first time with a strike that had to be touched over. Alex Scott flashed a shot wide from the edge of the box not long after Fisher pushed out Antoine Semenyo’s cross.

Manning’s backpass then got held up on the soggy surface, allowing Weimann to nip in but City were denied by an offside flag.

Swansea enjoyed 71 per cent of the first-half possession but they went in at the break behind thanks to Weimann’s intervention.

They were hustled off the ball in midfield by Antoine Semenyo and he was able to pick out Weimann’s run through the centre. There was a suspicion of offside but no flag went up.

The Austrian was able to hold off Manning, who tried to get back and challenge him, and then fired his shot beyond Fisher before the Swansea defender could slide in to tackle.

It was Weimann’s 15th goal of the season and Semenyo’s seventh assist, which is about as productive as anyone in City’s team has been.

Swansea began the second period on the front foot and were soon rewarded with an equaliser.

Christie ran diagonally into the box, seeming to spurn one shooting angle before taking a touch and crossing low to the back post. Obafemi, taking a gamble on the ball coming his way, was left with a simple tap-in, his third goal of the season.

Bristol City were forced to change their goalkeeper after O’Leary picked up a knock when Obafemi slid into him chasing the ball, earning a booking, with Daniel Bentley coming on.

Fisher almost came a cropper when trying to control a backpass on the slippery surface, losing the ball to Weimann on the byline. Swansea, not for the first time, had played themselves into trouble but recovered in time.

The visitors hadn’t created a great deal in the second half but Weimann saw a shot loop over the top after Finley Burns desperately dived in to block. Martin tried a cheeky backheel from the corner, but it went over.

They needed that to go in, as it transpired. Christie and Piroe ensured it was Swansea’s day.
