Jurgen Klopp has challenged his players to deliver the silverware that will make them Liverpool legends by winning at Wembley for the first time in a decade.

The German has brought four trophies to Anfield during his reign but he believes the time has come to add to that tally and is desperate to add the Carabao Cup to his haul.

Liverpool last won this competition in February 2012, when beating Cardiff on penalties, and Klopp feels a victory against Chelsea would be a catalyst for the rest of the season.

‘We will try with everything to have this Wembley moment,’ said Klopp. ‘We cannot do more. The boys deserve pretty much everything. But how can we say Chelsea don’t deserve it?

‘We can’t sit here and talk about it like it’s already ours: Chelsea has exactly the same chance. They won the Club World Cup and we know how great that feels.’

The Club World Cup was part of a trophy treble that Liverpool landed in 2019-20 and sat alongside the Premier League and European Super Cup.

It is possible to argue that this current squad is playing just as well – if not better – than that group of players but Klopp is aware of the need for them to back it up with success.

He said: ‘In 20 years if you want to talk about this team, I would not be surprised if we don’t win anything anymore, people will say: “Yeah they were good… but they should have won more”.

‘That’s why we should try now to win a few things. And the next chance, the best chance we have this weekend, is against Chelsea when it’s really tricky.’
