Villarreal defeated Manchester United in the final of the Europa League after a marathon penalty shootout.

Villarreal struck the decisive spotkick after the scores had been locked at 1-1 after extra time. The two teams managed just three shots on target between them over the 120 minutes.

For the shootout, all 20 outfield players converted their penalties in the longest sequence in a final of any UEFA competition. Then Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli struck his effort before he denied his United counterpart David De Gea.

It meant a first ever major trophy for Villarreal and saw former Sevilla, Valencia and Arsenal boss Unai Emery win the Europa League for an unprecedented fourth time.

In match action, Gerard Moreno struck first for Villarreal on 29 minutes befoe Edinson Cavani canceled their lead with his effort ten minutes after the halftime break.

It was a great occasion for Juventus and Roma great Zibi Boniek as Polish Federation president

United began the game favourites as they sought a first trophy under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
